Recently somebody was asking me where I get my writing clients from.
They asked if I was going to places like Upwork or Problogger to find my clients and my answer to that question is a big NO.
I do not use Upwork or any other freelancing website to find my clients and in this video I talk about why I don’t like freelancing websites and what you can do instead to find clients.
This information will apply whether you are a beginning freelancer or a mid-level freelancer like I am.
This is is no way bashing sites like Upwork or Freelancer or Fiverr.
I do think these websites have their place in the world but not if you want to have a full time income from your freelance work.
And while some people have indeed found success on these platforms, those people are rare.
Full disclosure: I did get one amazing client from Upwork about 2 years ago that has been a complete blessing to me. We built a personal relationship which led to me getting paid for a span of 2 years. But again, this is ONE client among MANY bids. I have never gotten that kind of opportunity again.
#1- LOW PAYING GIGS
Low paying gigs are common on freelancing websites. The truth is that because these platforms are open to everyone around the world, somebody living in a country where the standard of living is much lower than say the US, UK or Canada may quote a much cheaper price compared to you.
And for the poster of the gig, it will make sense that if they are getting the same quality of work for cheaper that they would pay those cheaper rates.
If you are a freelancer, there is so many better opportunities out there in the world for you than trying to scramble for $10 and $20 dollar gigs.
If you’re starting out and would like to learn the ropes, yes maybe these platforms can work for you.
But if you are serious about making a decent living off your freelance work, freelancing websites are exactly where you don’t want to be.
#2- STIFF COMPETITION
When I used to bid on Upwork for gigs, I would put in my proposal in and come back an hour to find 50 or more freelancers had bid on the same gigs!
Needless to say, even though I am positive those people would have been happy with my work, I hardly ever got gigs there.
The sheer number of people who apply for the same gig is so ridiculous, I ended up deciding it was not worth it.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
What should you do instead of hitting all the freelancing websites?
Build your own network.
Attend in-person events.
Tell people you offer a freelance service.
Research your local area, city, state, region or country.
Look for people who could make use of your skills and who will be willing to pay you handsomely for your work.
As you can see, this option takes work. It is also why many people DON’T do it.
Less competition means you are more likely to land the gig and you will get paid handsomely as well.
