How would it feel if you came to the end of 2019 and realized that you had achieved some pretty amazing goals?
One of the biggest keys to achieving anything worthwhile is to stay consistent.
And so perhaps this year you have decided that you want to:
Whatever that goal is, I can assure you that it is not going to happen simply because you wish it.
However, if you’re willing to take small, actionable steps each day, you will be surprised at what you will accomplish come December 31 2019.
So what are the 5 secrets to staying consistent? Here they are.

How to stay consistent with your goals this year
Choose ONE thing and make progress on that each day
A powerful book I read in 2017 was a book called The One Thing.
The whole point of the book is this: we have more things to do in this life than we have the time for. Thus to become effective, it is important to choose one thing at a time to focus on. Doing this will allow you to do that one thing better than if you tried to do ten other things at the same time.
I have found this idea to be very true.
There was a time at the beginning of my online career when I wanted to do everything.
I wanted to drop-ship.
I wanted to create courses.
I wanted to do a podcast.
I wanted to live-stream everyday.
I wanted to be an Instagram star.
Listen, if I heard about it on a popular podcast, I wanted to try it!
The result of that as you can imagine is that I ended up nowhere.
Not only do you overwhelm yourself when you try to do multiple things at once; you will also end up with no result.
It’s one thing if you have a large team of people working with you.
But if you’re a solopreneur, multiple goals will cripple you.
So instead of choosing many goals this year, focus on one.
Break the one goal down into STEPS
Here is another reason why choosing one goal to focus on in your business is crucial: every goal requires multiple steps to achieve.
Thus, if you have 5 massive goals and each of them has between 5-10 steps in order to achieve them, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
It is easier to do 5 or even 10 steps for one goal rather than trying to juggle up to 50 different steps for.
So now that you’ve picked the one goal you want to focus on, break it down into steps you can perform and work on those steps everyday.
I know this one will hurt feelings but, oh well!
Here’s the thing: life will always be full of excuses.
None of us has unlimited time.
If you have little children, you already know how tough it can be to do anything when they’re awake.
Money is tight sometimes.
And we could go on with the excuses.
I find however, that if you want something badly enough, you will make room and time for it.
So if your goal is to finally launch a freelance business, please stop saying “I don’t have enough time.”
We all don’t have enough time!
However, because running a business is important to me, I do whatever it takes to find the time to run it.
Collaborate/seek the help of a support group
In Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich, he talks about the power of a mastermind.
Don’t worry. A mastermind is nothing spooky. It is just a gathering of people with similar goals where they discuss ideas that help and benefit each other.
I have been a part of different business masterminds since 2014.
And I have been very profitable because of these masterminds.
No one person has all the ideas in their head.
Additionally, sometimes, when you have a problem in your business, because you’re so near the problem, it’s hard to see the solution clearly.
Having fresh eyes look at the problem is helpful and will help you gain perspective you didn’t have before.
So how does one find a mastermind? I am glad you asked!
I’ve always found mine via social media. In fact, in most of the masterminds I’ve been a part of, I have never met the people personally!
So go out there and get social in Facebook groups, Instagram, LinkedIn or even on YouTube.
Alternatively, you might be able to find in-person masterminds using websites like MeetUp.com.
If you have never considered joining a business mastermind, I challenge you to rethink it and join one!
Always be learning
Once in a while, I will find that I’m finding it difficult to move forward in my business.
9 times out of 10, the reason I’m stuck is because of a knowledge problem.
Hence, it’s important to always be learning. As you work to achieve your goals this year, there will come a point where you hit a roadblock. Chances are that the roadblock will be removed once you have the requisite knowledge.
My top three favorite ways to learn are:
- Books or audiobooks which are also becoming a favorite of mine! (Click here to try audiobooks on Audible for 30 days FREE)
- Online courses – I highly recommend Udemy if you want to get started with affordable online courses (Check out this post where I share 91 best Udemy courses for online entrepreneurs)
- Coaching and mentorship – If you have the funds, you could invest in a personal coach or mentor
Remember the Aesop’s fable about the tortoise and the hare?
The hare thought he was faster and that there was no way the slow tortoise could beat him at a race.
And so he went off to do something else thinking he would have time later to beat the tortoise.
The tortoise on the other hand patiently focused and walked the race until he won.
Staying consistent will help you any race you want to win in life.
Don’t worry that other people look like overnight sensations.
Focus on the 5 steps above and by the end of this year, you will realize how all those little steps have added up to something amazing.
